Stress. We all feel it some way or another…if we allow it. Just like any other emotion, stress is a choice. Maureen Killoran once said, “Stress is not what happens to us. It’s our response to what happens. And RESPONSE is something we can choose.”
You can respond with a negative or a positive. The choice is yours, but in order to break that cycle of feeling bogged down and overwhelmed, you NEED to choose the positive response. Acting with a negative response only contributes to the same behavior and actually worsens the stress load in the long run.
Regardless of your outlet, you need to face the source of the stress head on. Ask yourself, “Do I really want to be dealing with this for the rest of my life?” or “Even though this is temporary, is it truly worth it?”. If the answer is no, then you need to remove the source of the problem.
Here is a list of positive reactions one can take when feeling stressed out:
- Exercise
- Meditate
- Dance
- Read a book you enjoy
- Laugh (I love YouTube videos)
- Color/paint
- Cook or bake (try one of my recipes :-P!)
- Talk it out or write it out (journal)
- Take 3 deep breaths
- Write a list to prioritize
- Remind yourself that you have been in tough situations before and have found your way out
